Green Power Partners

Green Energy Ohio is now contacting Ohio organizations that will endorse green power. We believe that broad-based support of clean, sustainable electric generation resources in Ohio can build a competitive power market where consumers concerned about the environmental impact of their current electricity (coal and nuclear primarily) can vote with their electric bills for more renewable energy.

As part of an organization's endorsement, GEO offers to share green power information with its members. Informational options are short articles on green power for newsletters, or Ohio-specific brochures and fact sheets to distribute at events or to members. Our goal is to reach as many people as possible with this important message.

Green power is widely available in neighboring Pennsylvania. Visit the PennFuture website to find out more about Pennsylvania residents' green power options. Also see Pennsylvania's State Government Buys Green Power  on December 5, 2001. A summary of US Green Marketing Activities is a good overview of suppliers in various states.  We hope to make these options available to Ohio consumers as well, and in fact are working on several fronts to help make this happen:

In late July 2001, a Green-e standard was approved for Ohio. This standard certifies electricity from renewable energy suppliers. When the Green-e logo is displayed, consumers will know that the electricity actually is made up of 50% to 100% renewable resources. GEO has participated in the Green-e stakeholder group that drafted the standard and will help Ohioans learn about the standard.

Green-e supplier audits and provides statistics on certified products, and green power sales and customers. During 2000, 13 retail green power providers offered a total of 27 Green-e certified products in California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Connecticut. About three-quarters of these products contained 100% renewable energy, while the remainder contained at least 50% renewable energy content as required by Green-e guidelines.  See Green-e Verification Results for 2000.

Across the country, more than 163,000 customers purchased Green-e certified products, including about 8,500 non-residential customers; nearly 90% of these customers were in California. Residential customers accounted for about 71% of Green-e power sales. In total, Green-e certified suppliers purchased approximately 1.6 billion kWh of energy from eligible renewable resources to supply their green power products.

Ohio's first green power rate offered by the publicly-owned Bowling Green Municipal Utility has among the highest consumer participation of any such program in the nation. GEO was instrumental in developing this program with the utility which includes commercial as well as residential green power buyers. We are now working with Bowling Green toward installation of Ohio?s first commercial wind turbine as part of the green power offering that already includes biomass (landfill gas), low-impact hydro, and solar (photovoltaic) resources. (See GEO Website for more information about Bowling GREEN Power)  We are also working on green power with the Westerville Electric Division as part of its "Westerville Going Solar" program.

Green power marketing firms are providing green power to consumers next door in Pennsylvania, and are beginning to come to Ohio. A major green power marketer, Green Mountain Energy, is providing cleaner power (2% landfill gas and 98% natural gas) to 400,000 Northeast Ohio consumers who live in almost 100 cities and villages in 8 counties. See GEO?s study on Ohio aggregation opportunities: "Electric Consumer Aggregation Options" by Carol Sahley, Ph.D. GEO is also working with Green Mountain Energy on siting Ohio's first commercial wind farm similar to the GME Garrett, PA wind farm that began operating last year southeast of Pittsburgh.

Finally, an ambitious plan to offer all Ohioans green power from renewable resources is envisioned by Dave Rinebolt and the Midwest Energy Research Center (MERC) in Findlay, Ohio. GEO supports this statewide aggregation of a Solar & Renewable Energy Buyers Cooperative (SOAR). This effort, funded by the Joyce Foundation, will include natural gas and energy efficiency services, and is a great step forward. MERC can be reached toll-free at 1-877-439-3706.

Green Power Partners

We endorse offerings of "green power" from renewable resources (solar, wind, biomass and low-impact hydro) to Ohio electric consumers to foster a cleaner, sustainable power supply for Ohio's next century.
