Powell City Council on Sept. 21 approved using a design-build contracting approach for a solar energy construction project.  The approach differs from the traditional design-bid-build approach, in which the city hires an architect and advertises for bids.  With the design-build process, the city will contract with one contractor that would design the project as well as construct it.  The city cited the technical nature of the project — retrofitting City Hall with a 77-kilowatt solar electric system. The project is funded by an $821,861 federal energy-efficiency grant through the Ohio Department of Development.  The grant money comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Awards for Local Governments.

Power to the Solar People
Cincinnati Enquirer
With financial incentives, sleeker technology and reduced equipment costs, solar power is becoming a more approachable option for average homeowners, and a more common sight in the suburbs.  The 8th annual Ohio Solar Tour next weekend will feature 241 sites, up from 168 last year, including 24 homes and residential developments in Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren counties.  If there were an ad campaign for this new face of solar-powered homes, Michael and Marcia Eason of West Chester Township could be the star example.

Renewable energy that pays for itself
Cincinnati Enquier
Part of Michael and Marcia Eason's retirement plan is located in the basement. It will help take care of the electric bills and generate a monthly income - albeit small, but has nothing to do with taking in a tenant.  In July 2009, the couple worked with Carl Adams at SunRock Solar to install a 4.8-kilowatt solar panel system that connects to the utility grid and, over the past year, has produced as much energy as the household consumed, while bringing in about $100 a month, they say.
