The public is welcome at GEO's bi-monthly Clean Energy Network Meeting.  See directions to Cincinnati and Dayton area meeting locations below.  The Southwest Ohio Clean Energy Network consists of sustainable energy enthusiasts interested in learning from each other by meeting, sharing resources and participating in local alternative energy promotional events.  The goal of the Clean Energy Network is to increase energy awareness and provide resources for individuals and businesses seeking to reduce energy consumption.

7:15pm             David Chrestensen, Sol Ventus Partners, LLC.  David is one on the founders and President and CEO of Sol Ventus. They focus on helping tax-exempt entities, reducing their costs through innovative financing and creative usage of multiple types of business structures. David’s education is in finance and marketing having attended Kent and Cleveland State Universities. His passion today is to create a company that can make a significant financial difference for Ohio schools. He will discuss power purchase agreements (PPA’s) and how they can help schools and other non-profits finance renewable energy projects.

7:45pm             Brian Stall, ClimateMaster Brian is a geothermal expert with ClimateMaster. He will give us an overview of geothermal, explaining how it works and how it can save you money on your heating and air conditioning. Host Dayton Area Clean Energy Project Leaders
Nearly 100 people reviewed Dayton Area Clean Energy Projects at this meeting hosted by Green Energy Ohio's Pioneer of the Year, Ralph Dull [CLICK HERE] at his unique  Green Energy Information Center [
CLICK HERE] at Brookville, Ohio 17 miles northwest of Dayton.  GEO Executive Director Bill Spratley opened the meeting describing the 2010 Ohio Solar Tour.  Joe Jancauskas, Dayton Power & Light updated performance of DP&L's  1.1 MegaWatt Solar Array at Yankee Substation in Kettering, Ohio.  See last solar update by Joe Jancauskas at February 2010 GEO Southwest Ohio CEN Meeting  [CLICK HERE]. Chris McWhinney, Millennium Reign Energy, discussed the commercial and residential hydrogen generators and how to store hydrogen at home as part of his vision of a concept called the Renewable Hydrogen Micro Grid.  Wendell Ott, EnergyWize Division of Dancraft Construction reviewed the latest addition the Dull Homestead solar project which includes 22.5 KW (105  Sanyo panels) and 3 SMA Inverters.

Tour Oakley's Brazee Street Studios & Ohio's First Solyndra Solar Rooftop

 Over 60 people joined GEO for this meeting at Brazee Street Studios housing the Brazee Street School of Glass, over 20 artist studios, and gallery One in Oakley’s growing arts district. Brazee Street Studios is the brainchild of local artist and Oakley business owner, Sandra Gross.  See www.brazeestreetstudios.com for additional information.  Also speaking at the event were Kevin Kluender, RA, LEED AP, Project Architect, The Drawing Department explaining the features of the building that will help make it LEED Silver. Siobhan Pritchard, Regional Sales Manager, Dovetail Solar & Wind reviewed the Solyndra white rooftop solar system and what makes it unique along with a tour.  A presentation and Tour of Brazee Street Studios

University of Dayton Renewable Energy Program & Wind Projects in Ohio
Kevin Hallinan, Ph.D., Professor and Chair,  Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of Dayton explained the renewable energy program at UD and how it fits in with the joint masters program at the four colleges.  He also touched on the GE’s (EPISCENTER), the new Electrical Power Integrated Systems Research & Development Center near Dayton, Ohio which will be funded by the General Electric Company and the State of Ohio Third Frontier. The University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI) will be the fiscal agent for this program. John Leland, Ph. D, P.E., Director, Research Institute of the University of Dayton gave an overview of the Research Institute and describe some of the current projects that the Institute is working on.  David Champagne, Minster Wind, Minster, Ohio discussed the part his company is playing in the wind market particularly the United States market. He will also discuss the recent Ohio Wind Siting Board’s decision to approve three new wind farms in the state of Ohio.

Smart Grid Technology 
Larry Feist,
Renewable Energy Department Head will discuss new programs in Smart Grid Technology and in NABCEP Certification. See program outline [CLICK HERE]. Avery Adams, Manager, Smart Grid, Duke Energy will discuss the ramifications of Smart Meters and the Smart Grid and what effect it will have on our future electric needs. Duke has already begun the installation of Smart Meters in the Greater Cincinnati area. They expect to have completed the installation of 4 million smart meters in their 5 state service area by 2014.  For additional information [CLICK HERE].

Clean DP&L Goes Solar with 1.1 MW Array
Renewable Energy Training Venture at Upper Valley / Edison Community College

Two exciting presentations were made by: Joe Jancauskas, Manager, Generation Performance, Dayton Power and Light and Matt Owens, Director of Engineering, Ameridian Specialty Services. DP&L and Ameridian described the current installation of the new 1.1 MegaWatt Solar Farm in Washington Township, Montgomery County. The array is on 7 acres of property near the Yankee substation and consists of 9000 solar panels. These panels will generate enough electricity to power 150 homes. Art Bowser, Renewable Energy Coordinator, at Upper Valley JVS and Tom Looker, Professor of Engineering, Edison Community College will explain their proposed new renewable energy program and as new cooperative venture of Upper Valley JVS with Edison Community College.

Clean Energy Outlook for 2010 
GEO presented three expert clean energy speakers: Andy Holzhauser, Executive Director, Greater Cincinnati Energy Alliance updating the GCEA energy efficiency program for 2010.  Tim Wieck, Chief Engineer of Amp Motor Works in Blue Ash, discussed his firm's electric car and the future market.  Greg Bickford, Sycamore Township Planning and Zoning Administrator, Sycamore Township, gave a tour of the new energy efficient Fire Station.
At the Robert Schuler Athletic Complex behind the fire station is the 62 kW solar array - the largest in the Cincinnati area featured in the

Solar Energy Roundtable & Exhibition
Speakers from national, state, and local organizations and solar companies made presentations at this half-day event. See AGENDA [CLICK HERE].  This Forum was presented by the Miamisburg Mound Community Improvement Corp., and the Dayton Development Coalition, and sponsored by Dayton Power & Light, Co., The Melink Corporation, and the U.S. Department of Energy.  The GEO display was among over a dozen at the exhibit area.

The Mound, Dayton Solar Tour & Dayton Energy Show 
Meeting at the Mound Advanced Technology Center in Miamisburg, Ohio,  an overview of  “The Mound”  and the current redevelopment of this property was presented by Carl Simmons, Vice President Retired.  Next a review of the Dayton Area 2009 Solar Tour was presented by Karen Diehl, TFC Energy and Roger Hummel, Property Management Services.  Volunteer appreciation certificates were presented to Solar Tour site owners and volunteers by GEO Southwest Coordinator Jack Clock.   The program concluded with a Review of the Dayton Energy Show by Chris Meyer, Director, Energy Programs, Dayton Development Coalition.

Join GEO in hearing Bob Gilbert talk about the renewable energy program at Sinclair Community College as Woody Woodruff from the facilities staff at Sinclair explain the campus recycling program. Also speaking will be Dave Schmenk from Montgomery County and both Michael Berning and Dave Williams, from Heapy Engineering. Michael and Dave are Co-Chairs of the Dayton Regional Green Task Force.  GEO Southwest Ohio Coordinator Jack Clock will discuss future programs and the upcoming GEO Ohio Solar Tour on October 3 & 4, 2009.

Cincinnati Climate Actions & The New Cincinnati Energy Alliance 
Cincinnati State Community & Technical College
Larry Falkin, Director of the City of Cincinnati Department of Environmental Quality, discussed the progress on the Mayor's Climate Action Plan.   Andy Holzhauser, Project Manager of the new Cincinnati Energy Alliance gave the main presentation. The Cincinnati Energy Alliance is a non-profit initiative working closely with the City of Cincinnati and Duke Energy to launch a massive effort to retrofit buildings to a more energy efficient state. GEO Southwest Ohio Project Coordinator, Jack Clock also give an overview of the April 22, 23,24 GEO Solar Thermal Workforce Training and Installation Workshop - CLICK HERE - and the April 25 GEO SW Ohio Regional Workshop: Green Energy & Green Collar Jobs - SEE HOMEPAGE - both at Cincinnati State.

Executive Director Bill Spratley presented GEO's 2009 program "Green Energy & Green Jobs for Ohio" including clean energy events planned for Southwest Ohio and updates on state and federal incentives for consumers and new green collar jobs. Larry Feist, Professor of Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology at Cincinnati State Technical College,  addressed 70 people in leading his debut of the new labs of Photovoltaic, Solar Thermal & Geothermal installations and their functionality.  Local Installers John Fanselow, Carl Adams and Bill Spade described how such systems work and can be used in the home.  See Cincinnati State hand-out from meeting - CLICK HERE. Bill Spratley, Executive Director, and Program Mgr., Sarah Straley, also attended this meeting to encourage volunteers for organizing the October 4, 2008 Southwest Ohio Solar Tour.  A tour organizing meeting is set for August 6th.  For more information contact the GEO Office: (614)985-6131, sarah@greenenergyohio.org.

Directions to Cincinnati State - GEO Clean Energy Network Meetings:

1. From I-75: Take Hopple St exit and turn left onto Hopple. Turn left at the next light onto Central Parkway.
2. Central Parkway Garage is immediately south of the Ludlow Ave & Central Parkway intersection.
3. You may park in the Central Parkway Garage ($5 charge) and take the garage elevator to level 5.
4. Follow signs to the ATLC building. Once you cross the street, the large building in front of you is the ATLC.
5. As you enter the ATLC building the book store will be on your right and an elevator to your left. Please follow the signs.
