May 4, 2006 Meeting Summary

The featured guest speaker for this regular meeting of the Central Ohio Clean Energy Network was Roger Beck, a Worthington Kilbourne High School teacher, who presented information on the LEED-Home pilot project. The Columbus Green Building Forum and the Worthington Kilbourne High School educational program, Home B.A.S.E., have partnered with the Columbus Housing Partnership and the City of Columbus to build a signature "green" affordable house for the working poor in 2006.

Project
The site selected is an urban infill lot and is located at 254 North 21st St., Columbus, OH 43203. This cutting edge house will be one of a few select LEED-Home pilot projects in the United States, thus bringing national attention to this project.

LEED - Leadership in Energy and Environment Design - is the premier "green" rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council and has been adopted by Federal, State, and private organizations across the country. The Lazarus building renovation is a local example of an attempt by a commercial builder to become LEED certified. The partnership for the next year will have to fulfill approximately 100 pages of energy and environmental specifications to become LEED certified. LEED has four levels of attainment: certified, silver, gold and platinum. The CGBF/Home B.A.S.E. project is currently striving to attain the prestigious gold level of certification.

Purpose
The working poor are the least able among our population to afford building failures and high energy costs associated with heating and cooling. By putting existing disparate green techniques into one outstanding sustainable building each year for three years, the partners want to showcase these demonstration houses as examples of the best building practices.

Through this project, the partners intend to educate the community on improving life cycle attributes of residential homes. The design team will address all five principals of sustainable design in this project: site, material and resource (eg. water) conservation, indoor air quality and energy performance. One of the key goals for the house is to enhance building performance for its owner.
