Active GEO member and volunteer, Barry Adler, is in the process of building
an off-the-grid renewable energy greenhouse/barn called the RainFresh Green Bioshelter.
It integrates a hybrid system featuring active solar PV (2.1 kW), a wind turbine (1.0 kW),
and a solar thermal drain down system (3 Sun Earth collectors) with radiant floor heating.

The RainFresh Green Bioshelter (under construction) is designed to
maximize passive solar thermal storage, with a cement slab floor, reflective walls with
soybean based rigid foam insulation, and a thermal curtain system to retain heat in winter months.

Plans include an aquaponics system to grow fish, freshwater prawns, fresh
cut herbs, salad greens, specialty vegetables, as well as having ducks for
their eggs; all under one roof, harvesting crops year-round.

Also at this site is a passive solar greenhouse, which features a
double-walled inflated plastic skin and insulation underground around the base.
Inner winter thermal tunnels will be used over the crops to allow for
year-round harvests of cool season crops here in Central Ohio.

Until the bioshelter is completed, a temporary small solar panel is being
utilized to aerate a pond for yellow perch aquaculture.

RainFresh Harvests currently is growing about 1/4 acre of fresh herbs,
specialty vegetables, dried Stevia and berries for sale to local restaurants.
Retail sales at a roadside stand are project to begin in the
summer of 2005.
